Protecting older adults for 32 years

Dear Friend,

Did you know that JFS has been providing elder guardianship and conservator services since 1984? Did you know that we are the only agency in Western Mass that offers this service?  Not only do we meet the needs of the client but we provide advocacy and a feeling of family to each and every elder in the program. JFS History 1981-1990
Early 1980's were a hard time for nonprofits as many lost government funding. Under the leadership of Michael Leavitt and Dr. Arthur Weidman (pictured), JFS weathered the storm due to its reliance on diverse funding sources including the Springfield Jewish Federation, community donations, United Way and client fees. As other nonprofits closed their doors, JFS took in the displaced clients- serving 1,124 clients in 1981. In 1984, Board President Hyman Darling was instrumental in helping JFS start a new Elder Guardianship Program. Meanwhile, JFS continued to provide adoption, counseling & family therapy, outreach programs and resettlement services. According to a 1985 Annual report, JFS placed five children in adoptive homes and provided 4,257 hours of counseling services. On January 5, 1987, JFS moved its main office to 15 Lenox St in the Forest Park section of Springfield where it continues to be today.
