“It’s hard to believe that I’ve been here five years."

“My friend was working at JFS and had good things to say.  She recommended that I apply for the receptionist position.  I did so and was hired.  I knew nothing about JFS.  It’s been a whirlwind of activity these past five years!

Jewish Family Service is the only place I’ve seen that is open to helping everyone.  If there is a program to help or a service to improve someone’s quality of life, we’re there.  Like the mission statement says, we perform acts of loving kindness.  I see so many people come for services from diverse backgrounds, locally and around the globe.  If a client needs something we cannot provide; we find someone who can help that person.”

Joanna was born in Springfield and her family roots go back to Puerto Rico.  As a Latina woman, she brings her rich experiences and background to our staff.  Having bilingual ability, she provides invaluable help in different situations.

“Every day here is different.  The next telephone call or visitor could bring a surprise.  One of the most unusual things I’ve done is to accompany one of our older adult case managers to a rehab center to help with interpreting for a Spanish speaking client.  On several occasions, we would stop at one of the Spanish restaurants for a meal that the client would enjoy.  It’s the little extra things that mean so much.

I am proud to work for JFS and I love it here.  The work we do is essential for the people we serve.  It’s not just a 9 to 5 job.  The people I work with are great; we get along and try to help each other.”
